Overview

The term ‘web site hosting’ can cover a range of services that enable a company’s web site to be available online. At the simplest level a web hosting company will register a domain name (e.g. www.yourcompany.co.nz), provide a set amount of server space for a website, say 10, 50 or 100MB, and an allocation of POP email addresses (e.g. name@yourcompany.co.nz).

The most professional web hosting companies will maintain a number of connections to large ‘backbone’ internet providers to ensure that your web site is accessible at high speed from anywhere in the world, and your website will be regularly backed up to ensure the content is not lost through system failure or other disasters.

Web hosting companies may also provide a range of e-commerce services, such as shopping cart development tools and multi-currency on-line  payment services which allow you to sell goods or services online in US Dollars or other currencies, or secure pages which allow visitors to safely submit credit card details or other sensitive data to your site.

Web hosting providers can also set up small data centres, where dedicated servers are leased to you and maintained on your behalf. Application service providers (ASPs) go one step further and will source and provide your e-business solutions and host and manage them. They may also look after e-business security, ongoing development, and work to integrate your e-business systems with other systems in your business.
