GOTCHA! Catching burglars on your 3G phone

The Smart Sensor Alarm is new security technology that sends live video footage of an intruder to your 3G phone...

This smart little alarm looks like a normal sensor but
has an intelligent combination of camera, sensor and
SIM technology. When activated you can see what’s happening in real time at your home business or bach
from the safety of your 3G phone.

The smart sensor alarm puts security back in your control. Not only do you receive live video to your phone, but a video is sent to your email address providing compelling video evidence should the need arise. You choose whether you will self-monitor or continue to use monitoring services – however before sending out the security van you can check on your phone to determine whether the activation was caused by foul means or the neighbours nosey cat.

“The smart alarm changes the face of security” says Tony McDrury managing director of Smart Sensor Alarms Ltd. “Being able to provide the police with confirmation of a break-in as it’s happening will not only increase the likelihood of immediate police assistance, but it also allows you to confront a burglar and record their presence directly from your mobile phone, and a safe distance away from the actual break-in. Not having to enter the premises yourself once an alarm has been activated significantly reduces risk of serious injury from confrontation or the costly exercise of sending out the security monitoring company.”

Add to your existing system
The Smart Sensor Alarm is a logical addition to an existing security system. There is no need to rip out your existing investment to use the smart alarm. Instead, replacing an existing sensor or sensors within your premises with the Smart Sensor Alarm will set up your home and business with next generation 3G security. It’s that easy.

How it works
The Smart Sensor Alarm sends video data over any of New Zealand’s 3G networks – currently this means those operated by Vodafone and Telecom. It consists of an alarm system, a speaker, and a camera with recording capabilities. The system can be set to either sound an audio alarm or operate in quiet mode. There are audio capabilities enabling the phone owner to have dialogue with an intruder if they desire.

When the system’s sensors detect suspicious or criminal activity at the protected site, the Smart Sensor Alarm system sends video footage to the 3G-capable phone of the home or business owner. It also sends video via e-mail to the owner, providing both an immediate response mechanism via the phone, and irrefutable evidence for any criminal proceedings.

Product support
Smart Sensor Alarms Ltd holds the distribution license for this newly released 3G Smart Sensor Alarm technology, developed by New Zealand technology company Cyetec.

Smart Sensor Alarms Ltd is taking advantage of the 3G network created by the Telcos as they tussle for market share. “Telecom’s launch of its new 3G network has provided extra competition and coverage for 3G services.
The Smart Sensor is one of many new applications that will use 3G bandwidth and enables us to deliver customers with next-generation security and alarm systems that are way ahead of the pack,” says McDrury.

Business monitoring
“The Smart Sensor Alarm operates with and also separately from an existing alarm system,” says Andy Beatty, sales director for Smart Sensor Alarms Ltd. “Often, a business owner does not know when an office is accessed or information is accessed by unauthorised staff, as the main alarm would have been legitimately deactivated. The Smart Sensor enables these areas to be monitored by business owners or management ensuring only authorised staff enter certain offices or business zones and capturing evidence to the contrary.”

“Also the Smart Sensor Alarm is discreet as it looks like an ordinary sensor and therefore does not attract interest when the main alarm is deactivated.”

User scenarios
Glengarry Wines in central Auckland was broken into recently and cleaned out after burglars cut the phone line and then waited patiently to ensure no monitoring company turned up. They then took over three hours to fleece the premises of high-end wines and spirits. McDrury says a Smart Sensor Alarm would have recorded this activity silently, allowing the business owner to alert the police and ensure a successful arrest. “Also”, added McDrury, “as the device has audio capabilities, the owner of the business could have an interesting dialogue with the burglar and sent them on their way before they caused any damage to the stock or premises.”

e Smart Sensor Alarm is “plug-and-play” and McDrury says he is excited by the many options available to the user. “The boat, the bach, the home and the business are all areas where the smart sensor can give owners peace of mind. A great feature of this device is the ability of the business owner to selfmonitor important areas of his business.”

McDrury says the Smart Sensor Alarm would be of great value to business owners, general managers or heads of HR departments who have to ensure the security of important and sensitive company information. is device is great for bach owners, says Beatty.

"The cost of sending a monitoring company to check an alarm activation in remote locations is costly. The smart sensor allows the owner to self-monitor – or to work with a monitoring company after first confirming that an actual break-in has taken place. This is a massive cost-saving capability, as most alarm activations are usually from over-sensitive sensors that have been activated by weather conditions, or by stray cats or dogs. Sending out a security patrol to such activations is a severe waste of money, and it is a frustration that most of us can relate to. however, it is now a thing of the past.”

Sales and demonstrations
Smart Sensor Alarms Ltd are selling the Smart Sensor and a suite of wireless alarm products throughout the greater Auckland region. “We’re giving demonstrations and taking orders for the Smart Sensor Alarm now,” says Beatty, although he readily admits that there’s a four-week waiting list as the business manages the supply side to keep up with significant demand.

“The product is also designed and assembled here in New Zealand, and it’s a good feeling to be part of a
company creating jobs here in New Zealand,” says
McDrury.
