.NET in the Real World
.NET is a development framework. The .NET framework has been referred to by Microsoft as a new programming model for the Internet age. In fact it appears to us to be a new programming model for almost everything that is Windows related.
Over the last 10 years or so, Microsoft has gradually improved the Windows platform, together with the tools that developers use in this environment. This has not all happened at once, and there have been a wide range of tools developed over time, addressing issues such as the re-use of software, data access, and programming and screen presentation tools. One problem with this is that these tools and languages have got more sophisticated and (because of the need to support versions of these tools over time) more complicated.
.NET is a Microsoft initiative that has been a "ground up" overhaul. It involves a completely new framework, within which most programming tasks can be easily accomplished (while still maintaining backwards compatibility).
