Royalty Carpet Mills eliminates reporting backlog

Producing a new report at Royalty carpets used to require the services of a consultant. Now the company has implemented iQ4bis, its decision-makers can drill down to the data they need with just a few mouse-clicks...

Since 1963, Royalty Carpet Mills has become one of the largest and most experienced carpet manufacturers specialising in the residential replacement and new home carpet industries. Headquartered in Irvine, California, Royalty is the West Coast’s largest independent carpet manufacturer.

Royalty uses an AS/400 170 running manufacturing, AR/AP, and sales applications. In early 2005, Kien Trinh, IT Director at Royalty, addressed executive management about the need for a new system to replace the company's outdated database reporting process, where every new report request required a consultant to execute.

The executives at Royalty wanted something more dynamic than the static reports that the IT department had so far been producing. The executives wanted to drill into the reports in multi-dimensions to better analyse their business and the interrelationships between their business units, distributors, suppliers and customers.

Trinh attended Vision Event’s “Midsize Enterprise Summit” in Salt Lake City in late September 2005, where iQ4Bis had just been awarded “Best Software of Show”. Trinh requested that iQ4bis come to Royalty to prove that the software could do what the representatives said it could do. Initially, Trinh and team at Royalty didn’t believe iQ4bis could perform against Royalty's proprietary system running on an AS/400 platform.

The iQ4bis technician took only two days to build an in-depth analysis services cube for ad-hoc reporting using Royalty’s sales data. The delivery of multiple views from the OLAP cube convinced Trinh that the executives at Royalty would like iQ4bis and they would want to act on a purchase.

iQ4bis would enable the executives, managers and business analysts at Royalty to drill through multiple hierarchies of data and discover new and interesting relationships they had not seen before.

Trinh’s Executive VP said she had been wanting for over ten years to find a product that could provide the type of robust data mining capabilities that iQ4bis was able to demonstrate in the Proof of Concept alone.

“I am very happy with my decision to purchase iQ4bis. iQ4bis made some big promises and they delivered on every one of them.”

Royalty decided to move forward with iQ4bis within hours of receiving the proposal. The following week the implementation was commenced by the initial development of data structures for sales, reporting formats for sales, and training users.

Two weeks later, an additional week was spent developing Royalty’s Production module. “Now manufacturing can see what they built yesterday and compare their production performance to past time periods all at their fingertips. They’re also on top of profitability. iQ4bis worked for our company and will probably work for others too,” says Trinh.

Dan Hicks, VP of Business Development, says, “If you can use a mouse, with iQ4bis you can get the information you want instantly.” Hicks adds that cranking out lengthily static reports is yesterday’s way of delivering information. Today, with business intelligence solutions like iQ4bis, all of the relevant information to evaluate your business can be assembled on one screen in multiple dimensions.

With the click of a mouse you can now drill through multiple levels of a hierarchy and gain visibility to the underlying data enabling executives and decision makers to make better and more informed decisions that affect their business.

IT departments no longer need to create custom programs under pressure to service a user’s requirement. iQ4bis enables IT staff to get beyond report drudgery and frees them to focus on more strategic initiatives.

Trinh says that when Royalty evaluated alternative ways to deliver the type of analysis that their executives required, the average cost was $250,000, plus six months to implement the alternative systems.

iQ4bis was the hands down winner, primarily because there were no hidden costs for staffing up to learn and use the iQ4bis suite of products. “We are now able to very quickly identify which products are selling and make decisions that will enable us to better compete in our industry,” says Trinh.
