TASER hits the mark with iQ4bis

The iQ4bis solution provides streamlined sales reporting and empowers TASER's managers to perform their own analyses...

TASER International provides advanced electronic control devices for use in the law enforcement, military, private security and personal protection markets.

TASER devices use proprietary technology to incapacitate dangerous, combative or high-risk subjects who pose a risk to law enforcement officers, innocent citizens or themselves. The use of TASER devices dramatically reduces injury rates for police officers and suspects.

After TASER International selected Microsoft Dynamics AX, CIO Ray Rivera’s next step was to provide staff with flexible reporting tools that would empower them with easily accessible, intuitive near real time data tailored to a specific departments needs.

“Part of our mission statement is that every employee must be committed to continual improvement of our products, services and processes in order to maintain our position as the world leader in electronic control technology,” says Nigel Deacon, director of application development at TASER.

The company deployed business intelligence (BI) solution iQ4bis. Designed for the business user, iQ4bis offers easy-to-use BI analysis, charting and reporting products.

“Since implementing iQ4bis in 2004 we have used it to improve our performance in service to our clients, the reliability of our products and the processes that support our organisation.”

TASER International was growing at warp speed. “We had outgrown our Macola ERP system and were in the process of upgrading to Microsoft Dynamics AX (at that time called Axapta),” says Deacon.

“We have a lean IT department at TASER and we were spending hours that we just didn’t have creating sales reports from the old Macola system. It wasn’t especially hard, just time consuming. We saw that upgrading to Dynamics AX would give us a platform to support our phenomenal growth but it wouldn’t solve our sales reporting issue. Then we heard about iQ4bis,” he says.

“We hadn’t really looked at BI before we saw iQ4bis,” explains Deacon, “but we liked what we saw. We had data – lots of it – but no easily accessible way to analyse it for patterns, trends and comparisons. And we certainly didn’t expect to find a solution that would empower our sales managers and upper level management to perform their own analyses. But iQ4bis offered all of that in what would turn out to be an extremely cost-effective package.”

Fast implementation
Implementing iQ4bis at TASER went extremely well. “Because iQ4bis is optimised to work in a Microsoft environment with SQL Server 2005 we were able to install and configure the software very easily,” says Deacon.

“So when Jeremy Dean, one of the iQ4bis consultants, came on-site to help us set up the initial multidimensional cubes, I was able to learn the process without too much difficulty. As a result, we have been able to build additional cubes in-house and do all of our own development work.”

iQ4bis has turned out to be a cost-effective solution for TASER.

“We spend hardly anything on maintenance and we do our own training.” says Deacon.

“Jeremy is, however, always available to help us out if we have a particular issue that needs addressing, but by-and-large we are totally self-sufficient.” Dean adds: “Nigel picked up the process very quickly. They have really taken full advantage of all of the features and benefits that iQ4bis has to offer.”

Saving time and energy
Preparing sales reports is no longer an issue for Deacon. “When we first installed iQ4bis and set up the cubes and views, the sales team still asked me to prepare their reports,” notes Deacon.

“After performing several user trainings they started to see how fast and easy it was. After a month or two they were able to analyse their own sales figures and generate their own reports. So we’ve saved many hours per week of our time and empowered our sales team to be more responsive to market trends.”

TASER is also using iQ4bis to help them improve their quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) programme during the manufacturing process. “This allows us to keep our manufacturing process current and state-of-the-art,” says Deacon.

Future benefits
TASER is in the process of expanding their reliance on iQ4bis. “Now that we understand how powerful the tool is,” concludes Deacon, “we are actually redesigning our data capture process to give us more information to analyse. Order origin tracking is next on the agenda.”
