Overview
Outsourcing may be defined as contracting with outside companies, consultants, or service bureaux to perform business processes that were previously handled in-house.
Usually the processes or tasks are outsourced to organisations which are proven experts in the area, or have a lower cost structure. In other words outsourcing allows a company to maximise efficiencies by getting outside companies to perform a task more cheaply or better so the organisation can focus on core activities.
Outsourcing usually involves transferring a significant amount of management control to the supplier. Simply buying products or services from another company is not necessarily outsourcing or out-tasking, but merely a vendor relationship.
Outsourcing business is characterised by expertise not inherent to the core of the client organisation.
Managing IT functions, extending the supply chain, and improving communications are all tasks which it is becoming increasingly common to hand over to experts.
Document-centric processes, including accounts payable and receivables, applications/response processing, personalised print and mail, payments and claims processing, are also ideal candidates for outsourcing.
When outsourcing IT functions, many companies start with a selective approach. They might start by outsourcing their network, then as they become confident they carve off other aspects of their IT department. In many cases companies simply transfer their IT specialists off to an outsourcing company and put a service level agreement in place.
